Sounder at Heart Defensive Player of the Year: Yeimar Gómez Andrade Share this story Max Aquino / Sounder at Heart The Seattle Sounders went into the offseason following the 2019 MLS Cup Final looking to fill a roughly Chad Marshall-shaped hole in the center of the defense. Since Marshall’s retirement in May of 2019 the team had largely bridged the gap through the play of Kim Kee-hee and Román Torres, while Xavier Arreaga got acclimated to the squad. Heading into preseason in 2020, Arreaga was the only centerback still on the roster. Seattle added Yeimar Gómez Andrade, a 27-year-old Colombian defender, from Union de Santa Fe using Targeted Allocation Money in February and he quickly became the stabilizing force the team had been searching for. ....
Sounder at Heart Young Player of the Year: Nouhou Share this story Max Aquino / Sounder at Heart The 2020 season wasn’t kind to young players in the Seattle Sounders system. Due to COVID-19 both the MLS and USL seasons were compressed, and players weren’t able to move between the Sounders and Tacoma Defiance and the Academy, for that matter with the same ease as other seasons. As a result, minutes were more difficult to come by for the younger players on the Sounders roster, especially as the team pushed for silverware. In light of those circumstances, it makes sense that Nouhou drew 71.6% of the vote for Young Player of the Year. Alec Diaz came in second in the voting, with 12.5%, on the strength of his 5 goal, 1 assist season as the primary striker for Tacoma Defiance. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Ray Serrano was named The Defiant by Dave Clark in honor of his impressive season. ....
Photo by Visual China Group via Getty Images/Visual China Group via Getty Images If there’s been one constant in Gustav Svensson’s nomadic soccer career, it’s been a willingness to move wherever there’s opportunity. Now that spirit of adventure may be taking him back to China. Svensson has been linked to a move back to Guangzhuou City, the same team that first loaned him to the Seattle Sounders in 2017. Guangzhou City(R&F) are close to sign Gustav Svensson, whose contract with Seattle Sounders will expire soon. The Swedish defender played for Guangzhou R&F in 2016 as a linchpin player. Their targets also involve Everaldo (Kashima Antlers) and Guilherme (Göztepe, Turkey). pic.twitter.com/Z9vAbv4Fvr Titan Sports Plus (@titan plus) December 26, 2020 ....
What’s going on with the out-of-contract Sounders? Share this story Max Aquino / Sounder at Heart The MLS Re-Entry Draft is now in the books. So far, the Seattle Sounders haven’t made any changes and the players they chose not to re-sign are still without teams. There have been some subtle changes, though. Related Free agents Joevin Jones: The midfielder/left back has been linked with potential moves to either the Houston Dynamo or Columbus Crew, but nothing has yet materialized. There was also a rumor that he opted into the Re-Entry Draft, but his namenever appeared on any of the lists of eligible players. He’d certainly be an interesting option at left back for someone, but probably can’t expect to make anywhere near the $500,000+ salary he was making. ....
Seattle Sounders at Columbus Crew: Player ratings Share this story I won’t sugarcoat it, this was a debacle, a disaster, a downright embarrassing soccer match that took me over a week to process and hours to put my thoughts into words. Seattle was hesitant, tentative, and unable to deal with the intensity and pressure that the home team presented from the first whistle. The final was 3-0 and Columbus rather comfortably hoisted the MLS Cup at home, with Sounders fans left to ponder how it all went wrong. Seattle was thoroughly outplayed in the first half, failing to show much fight against the Crew, who came out pumped up, dominating with intensity and skill like the Sounders hadn’t seen this season. The “hot hand” lineup choices were not even warm, resulting in a two-goal deficit and some dreadful play. The Sounders massively improved after the half and went 25 minutes without conceding. But by the time Seattle played at their potential skill level, they were down ....
