Skiing: High school athletes grateful for a most unusual season
While there won t be any state or regional meets, some conferences plan to wrap up their seasons with championship meets.
This wasn’t the ski season Dana Schwartz anticipated, but she’s making the best of it.
“We’re fortunate we can be outside and still doing our sport without as many changes as other sports are dealing with,” said the Cape Elizabeth junior, who placed first in the only two Alpine races her school team has attended this winter – one slalom and one giant slalom. “We’re just so glad that we even have races.” ....

Maine Nordic centers see a spike in skiers this winter
Cross-country ski areas in central and western Maine are getting more skiers during the pandemic. And after last week s Nor easter, Nordic centers in southern Maine may rebound from a dry January.

WATERVILLE Childhood friends Liza Goss of Wiscasset and Nell Houde of Jefferson have been visiting with each other only on outdoor outings during the coronavirus pandemic. They hiked together in the summer; then met up to bike in the fall. And when winter came, both returned to Nordic skiing after years away from the sport. ....

The 2020-2021 ski season could be viewed as somewhat of a disappointment for the Mt. Blue Nordic team.
The Mt. Blue girls, led by standout Emma Charles, are the defending Class A champions. Although the boys team is rebuilding, Mt. Blue has been able to add some exciting new talent. ....

WATERVILLE Harrison Bigos-Lowe joined the Quarry Road Ski Club out of necessity.
Until last week, the Auburn resident could not even practice with the Edward Little ski team because Androscoggin County schools’ yellow label prevented team activities. The Red Eddies now can practice, but the 17-year-old Baxter Academy junior plans on sticking with the Quarry Road Ski Club for the remainder of the winter, too, his first with the program. ....
