Solid-state technology capable of imaging individual photons of light to enable full-speed photon counting at room temperature is now accessible commercially. The CMOS-based QIS devices use patented sensor architecture and pixel design to achieve record low noise that enables accurate detection of individual photons of light.
Gigajot Technology, inventors of the Quanta Image Sensor (QIS), today announced the first commercially available QIS products.
Photon counting and reliable photon number resolving, until now, only partially available using esoteric EMCCD technology in highly controlled laboratory environments, is now possible with a compact form-factor camera, operating at room temperature - with the additional benefits of higher resolution and speed. ....

Gigajot unveils first commercially available quanta image sensors

Pasadena, CA, USA  Gigajot Technology, developer of the Quanta Image Sensor (QIS), has announced the first QIS products, marking the dawn of a new era in solid-state imaging. The CMOS-based QIS devices utilize Gigajot s patented sensor architecture and pixel design to achieve record low noise that enables accurate detection of individual photons of light.
The new QIS products are capable of photon counting at room temperature while operating at full speed, and achieving high dynamic range – all in small pixel, high resolution formats.  With 5-10x read noise improvement over conventional small pixel image sensors, QIS enables imaging at ultra-low light levels not previously possible. ....

Eric Fossum, Dartmouth s John H. Krehbiel Sr. Professor for Emerging Technologies, has been announced as one of just a few recipients of the 72nd Annual Technology and Engineering Emmy® Awards. The honor, a first for Dartmouth engineering faculty, comes from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) for inventing and pioneering the intra-pixel charge transfer CMOS image sensor the basis for all modern CMOS image sensors, including almost all cell-phone cameras, webcams, and many digital-still cameras.
“First and foremost, it makes me happy to see people using the technology to have fun and enjoy life. But honestly, it is also a little hard to wrap my head around how much impact it has had on society and business and medicine and so many facets of modern life,” said Fossum. ....
