Senate ed panel OKs 'implementation plan' for per-pupil weighting

MONTPELIER â The Senate Education Committee on Friday voted to approve its version of per-pupil weighting reform, an approach that, if successful, will establish a task force to set the parameters for setting an implementation plan in 2022.
The bill, S. 13 is now a âstrike-allâ amendment that puts a panel of four lawmakers and two state education officials in charge of determining a path forward â and possibly changing the weights. It passed the six-member committee unanimously.
Senate Education Committee members have emphasized in hearings that their bill is intended as an implementation vehicle rather than delaying action on the weights. On the other side of the argument, advocates say the current system is perpetuating inequity and hurting kids because of where they live, and delay in implementing the new factors makes a bad system worse. ....

Efforts renewed to expand Missouri's online sales tax – St. Louis Call Newspapers

JEFFERSON CITY In an attempt to level the playing field for Missouri businesses, all online retailers could soon be required to pay sales taxes in the state.
Three bills attempting to do just that were brought before the Senate Ways and Means Committee in February, each differing on how to address the resulting increase in state revenue.
These bills are collectively known as “Wayfair bills,” a reference to the 2018 U.S. Supreme Court case South Dakota v. Wayfair, which formally allowed state sales taxes to be applied to out-of-state online retailers. Missouri is one of only two states with sales taxes to not also have a “Wayfair tax.” ....
