Pope Field is named after 1st Lt. Harley H. Pope on April 1, 1919. Pope and his crewman, Sgt. Walter W. Fleming, were killed Jan. 7, 1919, after their plane crashed into the Cape Fear River. 
Pike Field is named for Lt. Col. Emory J. Pike, a Medal of Honor recipient who served during World War I. 
Butner Road and Butner Primary are named after Maj. Gen. Henry W. Butner, a North Carolinian who served during World War I. 
Gruber Road is named after Brig. Gen. Edmund L. Gruber, an artillery officer, who was an assistant commandant of the field artillery school at Camp Bragg and later commander of Camp Bragg. Gruber was a relative of “Silent Night” composer Franz Gruber and later wrote The Caissons Go Rolling Along,” which John Philip Sousa changed into what is now known as “The Army Song.”  ....

Sgt. 1st Class Joshua “Zach” Beale, 32, was killed, January 22, 2019.
Sgt. 1st Class Joshua “Zach” Beale, 32, was killed by small arms fire on January 22, 2019, in Tirin Kut, the capital city of Afghanistan’s Uruzgan province, while conducting combat operations. That was his fourth overseas tour and his third tour to Afghanistan.
He was assigned to SFODA 3123, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

SFC Beale had enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2011. He attended Basic Training in Fort Benning, Georgia, where he also graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne School. Beale graduated in 2013 from the Special Forces Qualification Course and was subsequently assigned to 3rd SFG (A). ....

Navy SEAL to Plead Guilty to Killing of Green Beret


DeDolph and Melgar were part of the intelligence operation in Mali supporting counterterrorism efforts in 2017. 
Just a few days after Melgar was strangled, the Navy sent DeDolph back to his base in Virginia Beach under suspicion of murder. Despite the investigation, the Navy promoted DeDolph to chief petty officer in August 2017 despite his admission of choking the Green Beret to death.
“It is another failure of leadership,” then-Brigadier General Bolduc had said. “I mean senior leadership. It’s unfortunate. He should have never been promoted. The investigation was started right away. They whisked them out of there as fast as they could.” ....
