US intervenes to defend tech giants
The Trump administration has called on Australia to abandon plans to force Google and Facebook to pay news organisations for sharing their content. The call came in a letter submitted to an Australian parliamentary inquiry by US trade representatives, according to
The Guardian. The letter described the plan as “vaguely drafted and confusing” and called instead for a voluntary code of conduct. “The United States respectfully requests Australia suspend plans to finalise this legis­lative proposal,” the letter read. In a statement Treasurer Josh Frydenberg committed to proceeding with a mandatory code, which he noted “is the culmination of an 18-month review by the ACCC”. Submissions to the senate committee closed on Monday. Ahead of the first hearings on Friday, independent senator Rex Patrick criticised threats by Google to exit the Australian market and its experiments in burying links to news outlets in search results. ....
