Security both inside and outside a children s home has been increased following the escape of five boys in March – with two of them being murdered while on the run.
Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Ayanna Webster-Roy said since the March 20 escape, the children’s home has increased security manpower, with increased internal and perimeter monitoring and increased the internal security infrastructure.
Webster-Roy, in response to e-mailed questions, said to further prevent such instances, the Children’s Authority under whose care the home falls, met with an inter-agency task force to discuss “alternative ways to exercise supervision and behaviour management of children in need of supervision (CHiNS).” ....

ACTING Supt Claire Guy-Alleyne, head of the police s Child Protection Unit (CPU) and Gender-Based Violence Unit (GBVU), on Sunday said children s complaints about being sexually abused must never be dismissed by their parents or guardians.
Guy-Alleyne said this at a virtual seminar on child abuse hosted by the TT Medical Association and the Children s Authority.
A child who is abused may only reach out for help once.
Against this background, Guy-Alleyne said the CPU advises all adults that when a child comes home and says, ‘Listen, I am being abused,’ whether it is physical.sexual.the first step..is to believe that child. ....

THERE is a renewed call for the Office of the Prime Minister to make pass laws to make the reporting of child abuse mandatory after a recent UNICEF study showed 78 per cent of adults would not report instances of child abuse because it is not their business.
Independent Senator Hazel Thompson-Ahye said she has raised the issue of mandatory reporting time even in the Parliament, but it has fallen on deaf ears.
“Does the OPM have any plans to make a provision in the law that would make a person in the community report child abuse? There is no law that makes it mandatory at this time,” Thompson-Ahye said at the first of a two-day virtual child abuse and awareness and prevention symposium on Saturday. ....
