Anne Baker marks 107th birthday with NSPCC Childhood Day launch

A LONG-SERVING NSPCC supporter from Salisbury is celebrating her 107 birthday today (May 14) with the launch of the charity s new fundraising day.
Anne Baker MBE has been raising money for the children’s charity for more than 60 years, and was recognised in the Queen s New Year Honours for charitable services.
As lockdown continues to ease, the charity is calling on people everywhere to play their part in giving children a great summer and brighter future – as it launches its Childhood Day campaign.
She said: “I think that Childhood Day seems like a wonderful idea, and I hope children across the South West have a day full of fun. ....

A parent from Northern Ireland contacted the helpline with worries about their child. “I separated from my ex-husband a while ago and our son lives with me during the week and stays with his father during the weekends.
“My son told me that his father started to punch him in the stomach when he didn’t do his homework.
“My son is really scared to go back to his father. I was too afraid to report anything at the time as my ex-husband has abused me in the past, but now I feel I have to do something.”

A member of the public from Northern Ireland also contacted the helpline to report concerns about neighbouring children. ....

Deeply worrying : Child abuse referrals soar by 40% in Scotland during pandemic
THE number of referrals involving children made by the NSPCC child abuse helpline to agencies in Scotland in the last 12 months has risen by 40% through the Covid crisis.
The service made nearly 2,500 referrals to external agencies such as the police and local authorities from April 2020 to March 2021, compared with 1,781 in 2019/20.
Referrals are made when concerns reported to the helpline are considered to be serious enough to warrant further investigation or if it is felt a family needs support.
Physical abuse reports rose by 42% and there were 490 referrals during the year. ....
