New MVA chairwoman: Keeping community safe is priority

“We are working very hard to resume tourism safely,” she added, referring to the Torres-Palacios administration, MVA management and staff, the CNMI Covid-19 task force, the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisers, the recently created Tourism Resumption Investment Program or TRIP led by Commonwealth Ports Authority Chairwoman Kimberlyn King-Hinds and other tourism-related stakeholders both in the CNMI and abroad.
Asked about the anticipated challenges of restarting tourism, Alepuyo said, “The devil is in the details.”
“Anybody can say we are going to have tourism restarted, but how do you go about doing it?” she asked. “There is still a lot work that needs to be done, a lot of i s to dot and  t s to cross, and we have to do all of this in compliance with CNMI and federal laws and in conjunction with the laws and regulations that our destination partners must follow. OPINION | Together, we can safely reopen tourism to jumpstart our economy


WE can’t emphasize enough how the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. and the Governor’s Covid-19 Task Force have done a great job in establishing protocols that allowed the CNMI to manage the pandemic, save lives, and motivate us to work together in getting our economy back up and running.
Our economy relies heavily on tourism.  With ongoing uncertainty with this crisis, we must work on a road map for the safe resumption of the critical and only industry in the CNMI.
The Governor’s Council of Economic Advisers or GCEA, through its Tourism Resumption Blueprint, offers a pathway that recognizes the threats associated with increased arrivals into the CNMI and places the safety of its residents and visitors as its foremost priority. The blueprint recommends implementing enhanced safety protocols —  testing upon arrival, quarantine, and reporting and monitoring of visitors — educating stakeholders about the rapid response for containment, and creating ....

MVA: 'Bubble travel' may start next month | News

“Because we did not get an approval from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the application was resubmitted,” Iakopo said, adding that the new tentative date is Feb. 5.
“We hope to hear back from CDC as soon as possible,” she told the MVA board members.
MVA’s proposed travel bubble with South Korea will require visitors to get tested and undergo quarantine.
The board on Thursday also discussed the possibility of including Japan in the travel bubble.
