From unemployed to university student


Early last year Olivia Caves was unemployed.
Twelve months on and she is preparing to attend university following a little help from Carinity Fassifern Community Centre in Boonah.
After completing a work skills course at Carinity Fassifern Community Centre, Olivia Caves is now studying at university.
“Before COVID, I was working as a barista at a local café. I lost work and was unemployed for around three months,” Olivia recalls.
“I found that being out of a routine and not having anything to keep me busy such as work or study really weighed on my mental health. I struggled a lot to keep myself motivated and productive. ....

New study shows public thinks they are sticking to lockdown rules but others aren’t
The public’s belief on how well people are sticking to lockdown rules differs greatly when asked to compare their own actions with those of others.
Initial findings of a unique new study, by the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies at the University of Portsmouth, show respondents strongly felt during the first national lockdown that they were playing by the rules, but others were not.

Women and girls, who are often themselves victims of human trafficking and are sexually exploited by criminal gangs, are being prosecuted and convicted for human trafficking-related crimes, according to a new UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) report.
The over-representation of women and girls as both victims and perpetrators has been a consistent theme to emerge from the UNODC’s Global Trafficking in Persons Reports, says Flinders University criminology PhD candidate Alexandra Baxter who contributed an Australian case study to the latest report.
“From my research into Australia cases, I identified a significant theme during the sentencing of these women which was the victim-offender ‘should have known’ better because she was a victim,” says Ms Baxter, who is also working on the ‘Slavery and slavery-like practices in South Australia’ project. ....
