Liberal Democrat leader thanks Hertfordshire voters after elections

On behalf of Hertfordshire Liberal Democrats I would like to not only thank all those residents who took the trouble to vote in the local and Police and Crime Commissioner elections but especially those who backed Liberal Democrat candidates, not only for Hertfordshire County Council but in the delayed district and borough elections. On Herts County Council the Liberal Democrats made a net gain of five seats to strengthen our opposition to 23 seats against the ruling Conservatives who lost five seats, including their group leader, to us. Labour lost two seats, being reduced to seven. Despite a “Boris effect” the Liberal Democrat vote was also up by two per cent on the last county elections.

Devon and Cornwall police commissioner result: Alison Hernandez elected

Alison Hernandez has been elected as police and crime commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly for a second term of office. Commissioner Alison Hernandez won with a majority of 65.2% over second place Gareth Derrick (Labour) after a second round of voting. Following an election already postponed by the pandemic, the result was then delayed by a count that took more than 13 hours, following a ‘discrepancy in the results’ from Cornwall holding up the process. Ballots begun to be counted at 9.30am on Monday, but it was not until almost 11pm that a result was called. Commissioner Hernandez was eventually sworn into her role in Exeter late on Monday by Karime Hassan, CEO of Exeter City Council.
