Easterseals, NJ lawmakers mull fixes to programs for the disabled
One of the foremost nonprofits serving the state s residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Easterseals New Jersey is in the midst of a series of virtual meetings with lawmakers in Trenton, this month and next, to try and garner support for two key initiatives.
The first, Easterseals day habilitation program, provides daytime services and recreational activities for disabled adults, but a 25% cut in funding plus the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic have led to the permanent closure of four of what had been nine facilities.
Those nine locations combined served more than 500 people, raising concerns about the viability of smaller organizations that run similar services. ....

BMC's beggar rehab prog gets state nod | Bhubaneswar News

BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to introduce a beggar rehabilitation programme to ensure that no one has to sit with a begging bowl by the side of roads here.
As part of the programme, street-side beggars and those begging around temples will be brought to rehabilitation homes. Even those who arrive in the city from other towns and end up begging on the streets will be taken to the shelter home.
Three shelters will come up in the three zones of the BMC. The inmates will be provided with cooked food and basic amenities and be imparted vocational training so that they can be self-reliant. In case the inmates want to reunite with their families, the BMC will allow them to do so after they become self-reliant, said the BMC deputy’s commissioner (welfare), Kamalakanta Behera. ....

NY Lawmakers Consider Probe into COVID Patients Sent to Group Homes

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) administration could face another investigation as state lawmakers consider probing an in-tact April directive requiring group homes for the disabled to accept recovering coronavirus patients.
The April 10 directive states, “No individual shall be denied re-admission or admission to a Certified Residential Facility based solely on a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of COVID-19.”
It reads in part:
Any denial of admission or re-admission must be based on the residential provider’s inability to provide the level of care required by the prospective individual, pursuant to the hospital’s discharge instructions, and based on the residential provider’s current certification. ....

A woman in her 30s buried two unborn babies after her GP prescribed medication that could cause severe and life-threatening birth defects.
She was also diagnosed with drug-induced Cushing s syndrome after multiple doctors ignored warnings from specialists about overuse of a skin cream and failed to inform the woman of the risks.
Today, her main doctor has been found in breach of the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers Rights for failures in the woman s care. ....
