Portlaoise s business community has welcomed the €9 million investment in the Low-Carbon Town initiative as a much-needed boost.
Both Downtown Portlaoise welcomed the money which is in addition to an earlier €9 million allocated to the revitalisation of the town centre.
Portlaoise publican PJ Kavanagh is Chairman of the Downtown Portlaoise group.
Downtown Portlaoise are delighted with this week s exciting confirmation of yet another substantial grant for the future development of Portlaoise town centre. This, coupled with last year s equally substantial grant, is a much-needed boost for local traders in the current trading environment. ....

Green light for €9 million to expand Portlaoise low carbon town vision

Funding of €9 million is set to be spent on projects to make Portlaoise Ireland’s first designated “Low Carbon Town”.
Laois County Council is getting the funds to build on the work already carried out to date.
The money will fund the pedestrianisation on lower Main Street, upgrade of the public area along Main Street and Market Square and complete of the improvement works at the Cultural Quarter in the Town Centre.
It will also be spent on major enhancement measures of the streetscape of James Fintan Lalor Avenue and the prioritisation of pedestrian access, cycling and public transport. The creation of urban development sites in this area will be carried out. ....

Plans are going on public display this week for a cycle and footpath leading from a Portlaoise park to many Portlaoise schools.
Laois County Council is putting on display their design for a pedestrian/cycle link from the Portlaoise Southern Circular road, beside Summerhill school campus, through the People’s park exiting near the church. 
They propose a 3metre wide combined footpath/cyclepath, with public lighting along the route. It is to have biodiversity– pollinator friendly planting,  bat and bird boxes installed, with a timber post & rail fence in some areas.  ....

€130 million to be spent on Laois county development
Laois County Council unveils a three year spending list that largely relies on State aid

Laois is to get €130 million of capital investment across the county in the coming three years up to 2023.
Laois County Council has unveiled a budget of €130 million that it hopes to spend on capital projects across the council for the next three years.
Most of the money is expected to come from Government grants, including €57.5 million on new council housing.
Council CEO John Mulholland says that their Indicative Capital Programme will depend on future economy and State aid. ....

Ipoh council plans tree-planting programme along Sungai Kinta

IPOH City Council is planning to plant more trees along the reserves of the Sungai Kinta as part of its plan to ensure the river and its banks are clean.
Ipoh mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said the city council was planning to hold tree-planting programmes along the river, starting at the Kinta Riverfront Walk, early next year.
“We want to make sure our rivers are clean.
“We don’t want to see pollution as it will affect the water supply and impact the people, ” he told reporters after launching a “Green the Earth” tree-planting ceremony at Housing Trust. ....
