Wienermobile in Tuscaloosa, recruiting on University of Alabama campus

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile rolled into Tuscaloosa on Monday with University of Alabama graduate Zach Chatham, aka Zach N Cheese, co-piloting alongside his fellow Hotdogger Katie Ferguson, aka Ketchup Katie.
Yes, Hotdogger is a gig that pays real dough, with all bun-puns and wiener-fits included, handling the largest 3D billboard outside the Goodyear blimp, dealing out hot dog whistles, spreading the Oscar Mayer brand love as ambassadors, and, on this trip at least, helping to find next year s teams.
Hotdogger Team 33 will be in and around the UA campus for just over a week. College seniors about to graduate are encouraged to get in touch via Instagram, @zachncheesin, or @ketchinupwithkatie, to learn about Hotdogger life. There ll be a mandatory meeting to explain what s needed driver s license, ability to talk with anyone, dependability  next Tuesday, March 2. ....

Mars rover landing: Alabama student named Ingenuity helicopter aboard

Surrounded by NASA stickers and posters, consuming one-day-only Mars-style Krispy Kreme doughnuts, students and faculty at Tuscaloosa County High School celebrated a connection to the Mars rover landing, 293 million miles away, tucked right up under Perseverance s belly.
TCHS student Vaneeza Rupani suggested the name Ingenuity for a tiny helicopter hitchhiking along with Perseverance on the journey, which launched July 30, 2020, with confirmation of touchdown on Mars at 2:55 p.m. Central time on Thursday, Feb. 18.
Rupani s suggestion was chosen from essays submitted by 28,000 students who entered a NASA contest to name the 2,263-pound robotic geologist and astrobiologist, as well as its little friend, who will test the first man-powered flight on another planet. ....

Tuskegee-born Angela Johnson named Harper Lee Award winner

Angela Johnson, the 2021 Harper Lee Award for Alabama s Distinguished Writer recipient, was born in Tuskegee, though her name may not be as immediately recognizable in her birth state as that of previous recipients, such as Rick Bragg, Fannie Flagg, Gay Talese, Winston Groom or Mark Childress.
That s a knowledge gap the prestigious award should help address, said Jeanie Thompson, executive director of the Alabama Writers Forum.
I am very happy for Angela Johnson to be returning to Alabama virtually, Thompson said, speaking of the 2021 Zoom version of the Monroeville Literary Festival, March 4-6, so that we can make her work more known to families and readers in Alabama. ....
