SAN ANTONIO – A man who allegedly was carrying a gun on a San Antonio bus was shot and killed by VIA Transit police officers on Tuesday evening.
VIA Transit Police Chief Mark Witherell said two officers were called about the armed man who was on a bus traveling up San Pedro Avenue near West Olmos.
When they arrived and boarded the bus, Witherell said “something transpired” that led the officers to open fire on the man.
One of the officers has been on the force for roughly nine years, while the other has been with the department for one year, Witherell said. ....

An officer-involved shooting on a transit bus in San Antonio has left a man dead. Transit police shot a man who was said to be armed with a gun on a bus with other passengers. It happened at San Pedro and West Olmos. VIA Transit police chief Mark Witherell says they re lucky no one else was hurt. At least two shots were fired. None of the passengers or officers were injured. San Antonio police are assisting the transit police in investigating what took place leading up to the shooting.

Two Fatal Police Shootings Occur In San Antonio On Tuesday

The first incident happened just after 4 p.m. inside a VIA bus.
Two officers were called about an armed man who was on a bus traveling on San Pedro Avenue near West Olmos, according to VIA Transit Police Chief Mark Witherell.
Witherell said that when the VIA Transit officers arrived and boarded the bus, “something transpired” and officers opened fire on the man, killing him. He did not elaborate on what transpired. He said four to six others were on board the bus at the time but no one else was injured.
The shooting investigation will be conducted by the San Antonio Police Department. A new SAPD policy calls for body camera footage of police shootings to be released within 60 days, or for the department to provide a reason for withholding the video. In the past, body cam footage has contradicted local law enforcement s preliminary statements about certain shootings. ....
