Since 1995, the top 1 percent of American farm subsidy recipients have received 26 percent of subsidy payments, and the top 10 percent have been handed 78 percent of the total. The top 1 percent of wealth earners in the country got 26 percent of those. Fifty members of the Forbes 400 wealthiest Americans garnered some form of farm subsidy. Does this mean that farm subsidies are unfair? Or are they necessary to make food affordable to everyone?
Government subsidies to ag have taken myriad forms over history. Armies were the first and greatest of these. The Roman Empire’s famous grandeur was sustained by the feeding grounds of Egypt and Asia Minor. Slavery, enforced by military might, became the greatest ag subsidy of history. ....

SLEEPY EYE The Sleepy Eye City Council unanimously approved the reading of ordinances to sell lots in the Sleepy Hollow 5th Addition and in the Snow property Tuesday.
The city council approved:
• The first reading of Ordinance 180 to sell Lot 7, Block 4 to Greg and Deb Braulick for $32,000 was called by Councilor Gary Windschitl.
• The second reading of Ordinance 176 to sell Lot 14, Block 1 to Rod and Vickie Schumacher in the Snow First Addition came on a motion by Councilor Doug Pelzel, seconded by Councilor Nate Stevermer.
• The second reading of Ordinance 178 to sell Lots 3, 4, and 5, Sleepy Hollow Fifth Addition to John Pelzel came on Stevermer’s motion, seconded by Christina Andres. ....

The number of offices sitting empty in Australia’s cities has hit double-digit figures for the first time in six years and is rising, with vacancy rates not seen since the dark days of the 1990s recession.
At the peak of the country’s last major recession in 1990-91, more than one-fifth of the country’s offices were empty.
The office sector was hard hit by COVID.

A report by the Property Council of Australia (PCA) shows the national office vacancy rate has reached 11.7 per cent and may go higher, hit by the double whammy of COVID-wary workers staying at home and a large increase in new office supply. This is an increase from 9.6 per cent in July last year. ....

EPA, residents discuss New Bedford Harbor site cleanup


NEW BEDFORD  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is in its final years of cleaning up one of the nation s largest Superfund sites, the New Bedford Harbor, say agency officials. 
The EPA held a public meeting Wednesday evening with about 25 members of the public and local government in virtual attendance. Last year, the agency finished underwater dredging, completed shoreline remediation of certain zones, closed cleaning facilities, and planted salt marshes.
This year, the agency will continue shoreline remediation and salt marsh planting along the Upper Harbor on both the New Bedford and Fairhaven sides.
Contingent on funding, the EPA should complete site cleanup in four to five years, said agency Remedial Project Manager David Dickerson in an interview with the Standard-Times. ....
