Vermont 211 help phone line reflects community need during COVID-19

Candy Thomas was having trouble signing up for U.S. Department of Agriculture s Farmers to Families Food Box Program.
In the summer she was able to access the program, she and her husband received a fresh box of food that lasted them two months.
This Thursday, though, the online registration portal wasn t accepting her information and denying her access. Concerned they wouldn t be able to access it this time around, she scanned the webpage for more details.
It said if you have trouble to call 2-1-1, so that s what I did, Thomas, 62, of Swanton, said.
Thomas is part of a surge seen this past year in Vermonters seeking help from Vermont 211, a free information and resource helpline run by United Way of Vermont.  ....

Weather forecasters are confident that the dumping of snow Vermont, especially the southern half, got overnight Wednesday will last to the holidays.
“I think it’s pretty much a slam dunk that the snow we have right now is going to be on the ground for Christmas Day,” said Tom Kines, senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.
The winter’s first snowstorm traveled farther north than expected, leaving snowfall that ranged from just an inch or so in Burlington, to 44 inches in Ludlow.
“We knew there would be bands of heavy snow, we just didn’t know where those bands were going to set up,” said Kines. “As we know now some of those bands set up across southern Vermont.” ....

Rumors of intentions to defund/disband Ingram Police Department were part of 'fear campaign,' new mayor says

The Ingram City Council appointed two women with law enforcement experience to two top positions even as rumors of anti-police-department bias helped spur a flurry of peace officer resignations at the city.
Kathy Rider, a former Ingram police officer, was appointed to the mayorship by a 4-0 vote. Carol Twiss, a recently retired sheriff’s office captain and former candidate for sheriff, was appointed as police chief by a vote of three in favor and one abstention by Councilmember John St. Clair.
Twiss, addressing the audience in the council chambers on Thursday, said she is honored to have been chosen and will ensure the city has adequate law enforcement coverage with the assistance of the sheriff s office and a constable s office until new officers are secured for all positions. ....
