New crane raises bar at Townsville Port


JOINT STATEMENT
The loading and unloading of container vessels at the Port of Townsville has been supercharged with the official commissioning of a new $30 million Berth 4 Crane and Cargo Terminal.
The Terminal’s completion has been marked by the debut of the Port’s new Liebherr Post Panamax Ship-to-Shore crane.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the crane will comfortably double the operational speeds of its predecessor.
“The new Crane and Cargo Terminal is able to unload vessels at a rate of 35 twenty-foot equivalent containers per hour,” Mr Bailey said.
“Combined with the $40.7 million Berth 4 wharf upgrade completed in 2018, it’s more than doubled the berth’s overall handling capacity. ....

UQ, Qld govt to trial multi-modal app and subscription service for a year

University of Queensland staff and students will participate in a year-long mobility-as-a-service trial that will allow them to plan, book and pay for multi-modal trips through an app.
The trial app is called ODIN PASS and its development is being co-led with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).
ODIN PASS covers multi-modal trips made on TransLink public transport, taxis, rideshare, car-share and e-scooters and e-bikes.
Private operators including Neuron, 13CABS and GoGet have also signed on as transport options.
The technology itself comes from vendor SkedGo.
Trial participants can “subscribe to monthly transport plans and bundles to pay for services through the app, which will offer discounts and reward points on selected modes of transport,” the university said in a statement. ....

New Mobile Phone & Seatbelt Cameras Rollout Now In Use
Drivers and riders are encouraged to set up the Do Not Disturb While Driving function on their phones to help avoid using their phones.
Roadside cameras that detect drivers illegally using mobile phones and not wearing a seatbelt will start appearing on Queensland roads from today.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the fixed and portable cameras would operate on urban and regional roads.
“Our message has been direct and simple: just put your phone away,” Mr Bailey said.
“In 2020, 23 people lost their lives and 1475 were hospitalised because of distracted driving,” Mr Bailey said. ....
