Municipal leaders urge Gov. Lamont to include PILOT in next biennial budget
Hartford s PILOT shortfall is indicative of the state s level of funding of the program.
On Friday, January 15,  New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker and 27 of his counterparts, executive officeholders from across Connecticut, sent a letter advocating that Gov. Ned Lamont includes in his budget the necessary funding to implement a tiered Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) program. Here is the complete text:

There is an opportunity to provide desperately needed funding to municipalities, support small businesses, prevent an increased property tax burden on our most vulnerable residents, and secure future tax revenue for the state. ....

The Day - Local Republicans' views differ on Capitol violence - News from southeastern Connecticut

Some Republican officials in the region have spoken out following violent riots at the United States Capitol last week, some sharing conspiracy theories about the events that unfolded and defending protesters claims of voter fraud and election theft, while others have condemned what occured as acts of violence and domestic terrorism.
Phyllis Nelson, Republican chair of the Board of Finance in Sprague, said last week that she went to Washington, D.C., on a bus to participate in the protests to defend the Constitution and speak out against election fraud but did not set foot in the Capitol or on the stairs of the building. She said she left the Capitol grounds by 3 p.m. and left D.C. by 5 p.m., an hour before the city s curfew. Extremist groups stormed the Capitol about 2:15 p.m. ....

I particularly love writing about the impact of state and federal policy on local businesses. I also do some education reporting, covering colleges in southeastern Connecticut and regional K-12 issues.

The Day - 'Scumbag Democrats' sign from Ron's Guns owner sparks criticism from first selectman, controversy among residents

By
East Lyme First Selectman Mark Nickerson said he’s received more than a dozen complaints over a sign recently erected in front of the home of town resident and Ron s Guns owner Ron Rando.
The sign reads Scumbag Democrats Have Stolen the Election! Lying - Cheating - Ballot Padding! It s in the yard of Rando s Boston Post Road home, which is adjacent to Ron s Guns and other businesses.
Nickerson, a Republican, wrote in a post on his personal Facebook page Tuesday morning, The good citizens of our town are disgusted and outraged by the hateful message . AND I AM TOO. He went on to say he contacted the town attorney to ask if anything can be done but said Rando s free speech rights unfortunately will probably win the day. Nickerson included a photo of the sign and two pictures of the Grinch in his post, as he wrote that Rando is a GRINCH in every meaning of the word. He is obviously damaged and bitter.   ....
