Police boss welcomes appointment of West Yorkshire's first Mayor | Bradford Telegraph and Argus


THE Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police has welcomed the appointment of the county’s first Mayor, Tracy Brabin.
John Robins, Chief Constable West Yorkshire Police, said: “I wish to congratulate Tracy Brabin on her appointment as the first Mayor for West Yorkshire. This is an opportunity for all of us in West Yorkshire to benefit from the devolution of powers and money to a local county wide Mayor and I wish Ms Brabin every success as the first Mayor.
“I look forward to working closely with Ms Brabin and her team. I hope we can further improve the already strong partnership approach across West Yorkshire to reduce crime, look after vulnerable people and to make our communities feel even safer. ....

Mr Burns-Williamson, a former chair of the West Yorkshire Police Authority and Labour councillor on Wakefield Council, said: “It has been a really varied, interesting and at times challenging role covering much wider areas of community safety, support for victims and working with criminal justice, local government and many other valued community partners, as well as providing strategic policing governance and making tough decisions through austerity and other difficult times.
“I have lived and worked in West Yorkshire all my life and throughout my time as PCC I have always put the needs of West Yorkshire first. ....

Police Federation calls on West Yorkshire Mayor to meet | Bradford Telegraph and Argus

THE chief of West Yorkshire s Police Federation has called on whoever wins this week s West Yorkshire Mayoral election to hold regular meetings with the union.
Brian Booth said that previously the Federation and Police and Crime Commissioner enjoyed a constructive relationship, meeting regularly to discuss pressing matters affecting officers across the county.
Ahead of Thursday s election, when West Yorkshire will choose its first ever mayor - who will take control of policing in the county - Mr Booth has called on whoever wins the vote to continue this relationship.
He said: “I would hope the successful candidate would continue to meet with the Federation on a regular basis and listen to our concerns, as this happens currently. ....

Police appeal to communities to help fight domestic slavery | Bradford Telegraph and Argus


WEST Yorkshire Police’s Modern Slavery Team is appealing to local communities to help in the fight against domestic slavery after a 50 per cent increase in reports of the crime.
Modern Day Slavery comes in many different forms – with victims usually forced into work that usually involves long hours and very little pay.
The victim’s ‘employment’ can often be based in a factory, other commercial premises or as a sex worker.
But domestic slavery – where victims are literally slaves for their ‘masters’ and often their families – is the most hidden of all types – because it happens in the home, away from other people, literally behind closed doors. ....

Police launch national week of Action to tackle knife crime | Bradford Telegraph and Argus


WEST Yorkshire Police is intensifying efforts to tackle knife crime as part of a national week of action. 
Operation Sceptre will look at key themes such as prevention and education, and officers will carry out targeted operations alongside partner agencies.
Operation Sceptre brings a nationwide focus to knife crime and with coronavirus restrictions easing, it’s more important than ever that forces are brought together to remind the public that police are targeting serious violence. 
The week of action will give forces the opportunity to build on existing activity, highlighting at a national level the key prevention and engagement work taking place locally. ....
