Alcohol-Free Drinks on the Rise in Australian and Global Markets
Sales of non-alcoholic and low-alcohol beer, wine, and spirit beverages have more than doubled over the past year at BWS and Dan Murphy’s, two of Australia’s major alcohol retailers.

Avatar startup Genies scores $65 million in funding round led by Mary Meeker’s Bond
Over the past several years I’ve covered my fair share of upstart avatar companies that were all chasing the same dream building out a customizable platform for a digital persona that gained wide adoption across games and digital spaces. Few of those startups I’ve covered in the past are still around. But by netting a string of successful partnerships with celebrity musicians, LA-based Genies has come closer than any startup before it to realizing the full vision of a wide-reaching avatar platform.
The company announced today that they’ve closed a $65 million Series B led by Mary Meeker’s firm Bond. NEA, Breyer Capital, Tull Investment Group, NetEase, Dapper Labs and Coinbase Ventures also participated in the deal. Mary Meeker will be joining the Genies board. The company didn’t disclose the Genies’ most recent valuation. ....

Oregon House OKs gun storage combined with partial public places ban

PETER WONG
Oregon Capital Bureau
The Oregon House, on a largely party-line vote, approved a bill that combines storage requirements for firearms with a narrower ban on guns in some public places.
The 34-24 vote on Thursday sends the revamped Senate Bill 554 back to the Senate, which can vote to accept the changes — and send it to Gov. Kate Brown — or reject it and force a joint panel to negotiate the differences.
Support came exclusively from Democrats. Three of the 37 Democrats voted no: Paul Evans of Monmouth, David Gomberg of Otis and Mark Meek of Oregon City.
The president used his address to look forward to a return to normal after the pandemic. He touted the number of vaccines administered during his time in office, over 220 million, and urged Americans to continue to roll up their sleeves and get a shot. Today, 90 percent of Americans now live within five miles of a vaccination site, said President Biden. Everyone over the age ....

/
Sgt. Brandon White of the Multnomah County Sheriff s Office puts a cable lock on a training Glock on Jan. 14, 2019 in Portland, Oregon.
After three years of lobbying from gun safety organizations and multiple stalled attempts, Oregon lawmakers passed a firearm storage law Thursday.
If the legislation is signed into law, Oregon will join 11 other states with laws requiring locking devices on stored firearms.
The bill passed Thursday in the House, Senate Bill 554, also includes language banning firearms from the state Capitol, and allowing public school districts, universities, and community colleges to enact similar bans.
The bill passed 34-24, after a lengthy and sometimes emotional debate. Three Democrats voted in opposition: Reps. Mark Meek, David Gomberg and Paul Evans. It must now be sent back to the Senate, which passed an earlier version. No Republicans supported the bill. ....
