For many, Great Sacandaga Lake was refuge during pandemic | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS By Charlie Kraebel | Shares3 The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 led to the cancelation of annual events around the Great Sacandaga Lake and put a lot of businesses at risk. But the Great Sacandaga Lake region was also helped, according to Fulton-Montgomery Regional Chamber of Commerce President Mark Kilmer, because many of the houses dotting the reservoir’s 115 miles of shoreline are second homes and camps for out-of-town people, many of them hailing from New York City and northern New Jersey. That area was the worst-hit in the country during the early part of the pandemic, so that meant many folks who have properties around the lake came up earlier than normal, Kilmer said. Working and going to school remotely meant these families could take advantage of the “natural social distancing,” he said, as opposed to being stuck in their city homes. ....
[email protected] JOHNSTOWN A new initiative for the Fulton Montgomery Regional Chamber of Commerce geared toward working people in this area was outlined Wednesday for Fulton County officials. Chamber President Mark Kilmer reported on the “Be A Tourist In Your Own Town” initiative to the Board of Supervisors’ Economic Development & Environment Committee at the County Office Building. He gave the monthly tourism report in the absence of chamber Director of Tourism Development Anne Boles. “Anne developed this,” Kilmer told supervisors. The new initiative involves trying to encourage people who work in Fulton County, but live outside the county, to take the “long way home” and explore Fulton County. He said that, for example, many teachers and business people in Fulton County actually work in Saratoga County. He said the effort may help out with local revenue. ....

Local officials delivered a rundown of plans for the former Beech-Nut factory at Exit 29 as well as an update on an ongoing project with the New York Power Authority to install LED street lights this summer in the village, which will own the lights outright, according to officials. Mayor Jeff Baker shared information about progress with local officials and state Sen. Michelle Hinchey, D-46th state Senate District, the first-term senator in the district. ....
[email protected] The Leader-Herald/Michael Anich Futon County Administrative Officer Jon Stead gives his 28th annual State of the County address Friday morning at the Johnstown Holiday Inn. JOHNSTOWN The annual Fulton County government “State of the County” address after nearly 30 years could be delivered non-traditionally this year due to COVID-19. The pandemic is hampering the ability to get large groups together, and the county address for many years delivered by County Administrative Officer Jon Stead could be a casualty. “We are kind of in a holding pattern on that,” Stead said Friday. The “State of the County” breakfast speech by Stead given yearly about this time of the year is conducted by the Fulton Montgomery Regional Chamber of Commerce. ....
