Tue May 25, 2021 - Midwest Edition #11 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District Drill crews arrive on-site at the Hamburg levee on April 6, 2020, to begin geotechnical investigations. The information gathered by the drill crew will be used to complete the levee repair design. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, in conjunction with the city of Hamburg, Iowa, conducted a groundbreaking ceremony May 5 to kickoff construction to rehabilitate the Hamburg Ditch 6 levee. The ceremony took place at Highway 333 (North Street) on the east side of the levee. I m excited to join Mayor Cathy Crain and the city of Hamburg on this important project agreement to raise flood protection around the city of Hamburg, said Col. Mark Himes, commander, USACE-Omaha. I look forward to working with the city in the upcoming construction. ....
Flood protection project in Hamburg kicks off May 10, 2021, by Zlatan Hrvacevic The US Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District Commander Col. Mark Himes joined local, state and federal representatives last week for a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of the raising of the Ditch 6 Levee in Hamburg, Iowa. During the ceremony, the leaders spoke about the challenges of recovering after the flooding, and expressed their hopes for continued cooperation in the future. This levee was overtopped and sustained severe damage during the 2019 floods, so an additional eight feet will be added. This will significantly increase the flood risk management benefits the levee provides to the city. ....

Local, state, and national officials were on hand for a groundbreaking for the expansion by eight feet of what is called the Ditch 6 levee located along Highway 333. Omaha District Corps of Engineers Colonel Mark Himes saluted local officials for their efforts in pushing for the expansion to 919 feet. “Hamburg’s resolve to provide additional flood resiliency serves as an example to other communities along the Missouri River and throughout the nation who face similar challenges,” Himes says. “You’ve already done an amazing done, and have made tremendous progress recovering from the 2019 flood event. Mark Himes, Commander, USACE-Omaha. “I look forward to working with the city in the upcoming construction.” USACE and the city of Hamburg signed the Section 1176 project agreement Feb. 9 to allow raising the Hamburg Ditch 6 levee eight feet, significantly increasing the flood risk management benefits the levee provides to the city. ....
