Te Hīkoi Toi: Retail art therapy in the Cuba Quarter

Matt Forsman at the entrance to his Marion St hair salon with art by Ruth Thomas Edmond.
Mark Amery takes a walk of small independent businesses in Wellington championing local artists.
Before galleries, there were coffee shops. Harry Seresin’s Coffee Gallery, which opened on Lambton Quay in 1957, was a place where artists could exhibit and community gathered. Many werre to follow, Today there are over 30 galleries in Wellington’s CBD, yet many good artists also find space outside them.
It’s easy to be snobbish about art in cafes not meeting a gallery’s curatorial standards, but things culturally are far more blurred between art, fashion and hospitality. In the Seresin tradition, Wellington’s cultural reputation is largely built on the flair of independent businesses breaking conservative norms supporting artists. For the best illustration, see the ever-gentrifying hipster blocks around the crossings of Cuba, Vivian and Ghuznee Streets. ....

Te Hīkoi Toi: Finding new streams in the landscape

Bossley Architects
In Foxton Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom opened in 2017 in a former Mitre10 barn. In both languages it means ‘’the new stream’’. It’s in the shadow of a windmill, beside a flax museum, marking that it’s 150 years since this was the centre of a harakeke boom.
In this week’s art journey, Mark Amery takes us on a drive from Foxton, to Palmerston North and on to Masterton.
The things that dominate can also be those most taken for granted. The lower North Island is dominated by both the Tararua mountain range and large tracts of farmland. I took a summer Te Hīkoi Toi around the Tararua, from the Horowhenua to the Wairarapa. ....

'Terminal' - the international exhibition you get without you or the artists leaving the airport

Terminal
resembles a waiting room. Or, more specifically, those rooms currently more uncomfortable than a dentist’s, airports. Curated by Aaron Lister, this smart melancholy exhibition is dedicated to the politics, anxieties, dehumanisation and plain boredom of our airports’ transit spaces.
The gallery’s rooms are cleverly accessibly themed ‘’arrivals’’, ‘‘departures’’, ‘’screening’’ and ‘’runway’’. Smart video works play on multiple airport information screens. There are even the seats you will find at Wellington Airport to wait on - the ubiquitous Eames Tandem Sling Seating.

Even Quasi is waiting. The face-hand sculpture by Ronnie Van Hout, propped on legs made from an upturned two-finger salute glowers down on Ngākau Civic Square, atop City Gallery. ....
