News Gurnee Days 2021 Schedule of Events Gurnee Park District and the Village of Gurnee are proud to announce the decision to move forward with a modified Gurnee Days Weekend, Saturday and Sunday. August 7-8, 2021. Officials have confirmed that the Saturday morning 5K Fun Run and 2 Mile Walk, Saturday evening concert and fireworks, Sunday parade (themed The Great Outdoors), car show, food booths and Exchange Club of Gurnee’s Ribfest are all in the works. Updated 7/13/2021 5:45 PM The Gurnee village board has approved a $95,472 contract to demolish two commercial buildings in the Des Plaines River floodplain that housed a Dairy Queen, a spa and a vacuum repair business on Old Grand Avenue. The village purchased the buildings in April 2020 for $275,000 with the intention of knocking them down and removing the surrounding pavement. The buildings to be demolished are at 4609 through 4625 Old Grand Ave. ....
Gurnee resident gave lifetime of service to community James Jim Strang Updated 5/7/2021 5:20 PM Longtime Gurnee resident James Jim Strang, who gave a lifetime of service to the community, died this week. An obituary posted by the Warren Cemetery did not list a cause of death for Strang, who was 86.
His efforts in the community did not go unrecognized. Strang was named to the Wall of Honor as a distinguished alumnus by Warren Township High School, he won the Book of Golden Deeds Award from the Gurnee Exchange Club and in 1993 was the Gurnee Days Honoree. He had a 32-year career at Warren Township High School District 121. He taught in biology, health, science and physical education and coached football and wrestling. During his career at the high school he served as the athletic director, principal and director of Administrative Services and State Mandates. ....
Longtime Gurnee Fire Chief Samuel Dada dies at 91 Samuel J. Dada Updated 1/18/2021 8:06 PM Former Gurnee Fire Chief Samuel J. Dada, who was so revered that village leaders named a street after him, died Friday at the age of 91. Dada started with the department in 1948 when it was a volunteer outfit with three trucks run out of McClure s Garage and Towing. Six years later, he was Gurnee s fire chief, a position he held for 35 years.
Dada was instrumental in the department s evolution, according to the message announcing his death on the village website. He was a true servant of the community, current Gurnee Fire Chief John Kavanagh said. The fire service, and the men and women of the Gurnee Fire Department, lost a great leader and friend. ....
