Rising Oceans Part 1: Sea-level rise reshaping NC coast

SHARE
WILMINGTON, N.C. Signs of rising sea levels can be dramatic on the North Carolina coast. Stronger storms push storm surge up into oceanfront communities like Ocracoke, breaking records as the sea washes through the dunes, through homes and businesses, making the barrier island almost uninhabitable.
But the day-to-day signs of sea level rise are much more subtle. High tides increasingly creep into waterfront roads like River Street in Wilmington. Salt water slowly seeps into land, killing trees and ruining farmland.
North Carolina is already seeing the effects of sea-level rise along the coast. This three-part online series from Spectrum News 1 will explore what the state is seeing already, what it can expect to see, and what North Carolina’s coastal communities can do about it. ....

Questions remain centuries after disappearance of England's first | Living

Elizabeth II, a 69-foot replica of an Elizabethan-era ship used by the first English colonists in America, at Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo, North Carolina. | Dennis Lennox

Behind England’s venture was Sir Walter Raleigh, who held letters patent from Queen Elizabeth I for a swath of “remote, heathen and barbarous” land along the Atlantic called Virginia in today’s North Carolina, Virginia and several other states. ....

King of Crotona

King of Crotona
A rare run up to the Bronx for Forgotten New York, up to Crotona Park.
Remembering that I don’t write enough Bronx posts, I set off to parade around the near geographical center of the Bronx in the Crotona Park area.
Crotona Park, the neighborhood and the park, isn’t near the Croton Aqueduct, which runs through the western Bronx; it was named for a colony in ancient Greece famed for Olympic athletes. It was purchased from the estate belonging to Andrew Bathgate in the 1880s; a dispute with the Bathgate family prevented the new Crotona Park from being named for them. Bathgate Ave. today remembers these early Bronx gentry. ....
