President Biden is blunting the GOP's wedge politics

One of President Joe Biden’s early achievements does not get enough attention: He is rolling back the politics of culture wars. This is good news for his electoral and governing projects, but also for our country.
This assertion will invite contradictory dissents. On the one side, culture wars were bound to abate during a pandemic and economic downturn. The other response is: Are you kidding? If culture wars are over, why is Dr. Seuss all over Fox News?
To take the second point first: Sure, cultural conflict will forever be part of American life. Our habits, mores and assumptions are always in flux, especially given the United States’ exceptional religious, racial and ethnic diversity — along with our long-running feuds between big cities and the countryside. We battle even when there’s a surface cultural consensus: Think of the early stirrings of feminism in the 1950s and the furor unleashed by the Beats. ....

Cruz, Hawley Criticize Biden After Report That CBP Closed 3 Highway Checkpoints in Arizona

CBP Confirms Some Highway Checkpoints in Arizona Closed Due to ‘Shifting Trafficking Patterns’
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed on Wednesday that some highway checkpoints in Arizona are closed.
A CBP spokesperson told The Epoch Times in an email on March 10 that the checkpoints were closed in January “due to shifting trafficking patterns … Specifically an increase in single adults in the Tucson and Three Points stations. A skeleton presence remained for security. Recently, the equipment has been removed from the sites to free up those agents to return to law enforcement duties.”
“We expect to reopen these checkpoints as manpower and activity levels dictate,” the spokesperson added. ....

On Tuesday evening, March 9, the city council in Horizon City unanimously passed a comprehensive smoke-free policy that includes businesses and public spaces located in the fast-growing El Paso suburb. Here is a statement from the American Heart Association:
The new ordinance’s intended goal is to improve air quality and reduce exposure to secondhand smoke. Its passage guarantees the right of everyone to breathe smoke-free air, joining 104 other Texas cities with similar laws, including El Paso, Houston and Austin.

With Raimondo confirmed, McKee takes the reigns

RHODE ISLAND – The Senate has confirmed now former Gov. Gina Raimondo to serve as the next U.S. Commerce Secretary.
The Tuesday vote, which passed with bipartisan support, came more than seven weeks after President Joe Biden first tapped Raimondo to serve in his cabinet. In the hours that followed her confirmation, Raimondo would officially resign her governorship and pave the way for Lt. Gov. Dan McKee to take the reins.
“Serving as governor these past six years has been the honor of my lifetime,” Raimondo wrote in her official letter of resignation to McKee. “Together, we jump-started our economy, lifted up small businesses, made record investments in education, led the fight against climate change, made long-overdue repairs to crumbling roads, bridges and schools, and provided skills and a pathway to a good job for thousands of Rhode Islanders.” ....
