Updated: 4:46 PM MST July 30, 2021 RIO RICO, Ariz. Authorities say a teenage boy died but another one was rescued after rushing water swept them both away in a canyon near Rio Rico. Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Department officials say the incident happened Thursday night in Josephine Canyon. Several 911 callers reported two boys, ages 17 and 13, had been overtaken near a waterfall. Searchers located the older boy, who was rescued by helicopter. The helicopter later found the body of the 13-year-old boy in a wash. This is the third child in a week to die after being swept away in water. A 4-year-old girl in Pima and a 16-year-old Cottonwood girl died last week after encountering flooding. ....

Family files lawsuit in Santa Cruz County jail death [Santa Cruz Sentinel, Calif.] Feb. 4 SANTA CRUZ The family of a 21-year-old man found dead while alone inside his jail cell in May has filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against Santa Cruz County. Jailed in February, several months after his 21st birthday, Tamario Smith died on Mother’s Day from what the Santa Cruz County Coroner’s Office classified as an accidental death caused by over-consumption of water in a short period of time. “The over-consumption of water was influenced by Mr. Smith’s underlying mental health issues,” according to a June 18Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office press release. “This water consumption led to an electrolyte imbalance, which caused Mr. Smith’s organs to fail, leading to Mr. Smith’s death.” ....
