NEW DELHI: Less than a year after taking a sharp protectionist turn, the government of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is relying on overseas help to fight the world’s worst Covid-19 crisis.
Nations including the US, the UK, France and Germany have pledged aid after a second wave of the pandemic overwhelmed India’s healthcare system. Even China, with whom New Delhi is entangled in a border standoff, has offered assistance.
The first flights from the US are scheduled to arrive Thursday, bringing supplies including oxygen, components to make more than 20 million doses of vaccines, as well as courses of the antiviral drug remdesivir and rapid diagnostic tests. Today, Prime Minister (PM) Modi in Ahmedabad launched the Amrit Mahotsav of independence that will run till 15 August 2023, one year after the 75th anniversary of Indiaâs independence in 1947. He launched the Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav website.
He also saw pictures, magazines and other collections at a special exhibition near Abhay Ghat in Ahmedabad, as part of the Amrit Mahotsav programme.
âToday, is the first day of the Amrit Mahotsav of independence. This Mahotsav has started 75 weeks before 15th August 2022 and will run till 15th August 2023,â he said.
