August 4, 2021 | Tech Today | Michigan Tech

by Allison Mills, University Marketing and Communications
Through remote instruction, hybrid classes and adaptive lesson plans, Department of Chemistry instructors helped their students through the pandemic. None of them want to do it again but the pandemic, and its challenges and silver linings, varied between instructors, students and classes.
Some profs learned they liked online lectures and want to keep them. Some dreaded hybrid class prep, with its inevitable tech issues and 600-plus separate containers needed to run a single lab experiment. They’re grateful for teaching assistants (TAs). Most are still weary. One plans to burn the face shield they wore during in-person lectures Viking funeral pyre-style. ....

Bruisable Artificial Skin Could Help Prosthetics, Robots Sense Injuries

Bruisable Artificial Skin Could Help Prosthetics, Robots Sense Injuries
When someone bumps their elbow against a wall, they not only feel pain but also might experience bruising. Robots and prosthetic limbs don’t have these warning signs, which could lead to further injury. Now, researchers reporting in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces have developed an artificial skin that senses force through ionic signals and also changes color from yellow to a bruise-like purple, providing a visual cue that damage has occurred.
Scientists have developed many different types of electronic skins, or e-skins, that can sense stimuli through electron transmission. However, these electrical conductors are not always biocompatible, which could limit their use in some types of prosthetics. In contrast, ionic skins, or I-skins, use ions as charge carriers, similar to human skin. These ionically conductive hydrogels have ....
