Local students receive recognition for their achievements – The Echo


The 15
th annual Nanga Mai awards, held virtually yesterday, celebrate the achievements of Aboriginal students and the continued commitment and accomplishments of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal staff, school communities, and community members.
Banora Point High School and five students across the northern rivers region were honoured for their outstanding contribution to Aboriginal education in NSW public schools at the 2021 Nanga Mai Awards. They were among 33 winners recognised across 17 categories across the arts, sport, leadership and academic excellence.
Mia Thom from Byron Bay High School received the award for the ‘Highest achieving Aboriginal student in the 2020 Higher School Certificate’.

Player welfare front of mind for PNG Hunters


Player welfare is a key focus for the Papua New Guinea Hunters rugby league team as they begin a two week spell in hotel quarantine.
Hunters coach Matt Church said the players were making a big sacrifice moving away from their friends and family.

The Hunters have relocated to Australia so they can continue competing in the Queensland Cup, after last year s competition was cancelled because of Covid-19.
Coach Matt Church said it was a huge sacrifice for the whole squad to uproot their lives and move to a new country.
It s never easy leaving home so I m sure the group, while excited about the challenges and the opportunities that lie ahead, they were also (feeling) a bit of trepidation for them leaving friends and family for such a long period of time. ....

Brendan Elliot joins Leigh Centurions from Manly Sea Eagles
LEIGH Centurions have signed Australian utility back Brendan Elliot for the Betfred Super League 2021 campaign.
The 27-year-old, released by Manly Sea Eagles at the end of last year, has played NRL for the past seven seasons, with Sydney Roosters, Newcastle Knights and Gold Coast his previous clubs.
Speaking from Sydney ahead of his move to the UK, Elliot said: “I’m really excited about the journey ahead. I nearly came over to Leigh in 2018 but it didn’t work out and so it will be great to finally make the move. ....
