UGA students participate in worldwide community cleanup

As a part of the University of Georgia Office of Sustainabilityâs Earth Day programing, students and Athens community members participated in the Earth Day Global Community Cleanup on April 22-25.
By the end of the weekend, students and Athens residents had collected 870 pieces of trash and recycling over 579 collection events. The most picked up items include plastics, cans and cigarettes.
Due to inclement weather, the UGA Office of Sustainabilityâs scheduled cleanup was on Friday afternoon, where over a dozen students gathered to pick up trash and clean up campus.
âWe had a great turnout. We collected a lot of trash,â said Demetrius Jelks, the events and engagement intern at the UGA Office of Sustainability and sophomore biochemistry and molecular biology major. âAnytime we can get out in the community and partner with students, or community partners, it s always a success.â ....

Jenna Jambeck is internationally recognized for her work to reduce plastic waste, and her research has spurred governments, industry and nonprofit organizations to protect ocean wildlife and ecosystem health by reducing plastic waste generation and expanding waste management infrastructure.
A member of the University of Georgia faculty since 2009, Jambeck conducts research and teaches environmental engineering with a focus on solid waste management and marine debris. As associate director of UGA’s New Materials Institute and director of the Center for Circular Materials Management, Jambeck is shifting the paradigm of waste management to proactive materials management. This means thinking about how to create less waste and managing materials before any “waste” is produced. ....

Cities along the Mississippi River will take part in a new project to help identify where plastic pollution entering the Gulf of Mexico is coming from.
The Mississippi River serves as a drainage system for 40% of the United States and sends huge amounts of plastic pollution into the Gulf of Mexico every year. To combat the problem, the new project will allow “citizen scientists” to record sources of litter they observe along the river on a mobile app. Officials will then enter the data onto a virtual map that policymakers can use to develop ordinances and plans to reduce plastic pollution, according to an Associated Press article. ....
