The diverse and continuing evolution of Bangla

Some things are clear. Bangla s core the bulk of its basic nouns like
hat (hand) and
pa (foot), its verbs and the way they re conjugated, the little pieces of hard-to-translate elements (and I don t mean so-called untranslatable words like
obhiman I mean little words like the
to in
bhalo korechho to!) these were all inherited from Bangla s ancestor language. But here I don t mean Sanskrit (or technically, Old Indo-Aryan), which ceased to be a spoken language by the 6th century BCE, well before the Indo-Aryan cultural world even reached Bengal. Given this gap of over 1500 years between spoken Sanskrit and Old Bangla, what is our linguistic ancestor? ....

Magadha: Mighty Kingdom that Spawned Two of India's Most Powerful Empires

Why was Bimbisara Important?
Bimbisara is also said to have become the Buddha’s first royal patron. It was thanks to Bimbisara’s patronage that the Buddha was protected, and his teachings could be disseminated. According to Jain sources, Bimbisara was a friend of Mahavira, or Jina, the great teacher of Jainism. Due to his friendship with Mahavira, Jains believe that Bimbisara will, in his next cycle of existence, become a Tirthankara, i.e. a ‘fully realized being’.
Bimbisara is said to have become the ruler of Magadha at the age of 15. Bimbisara is considered to have been a virtuous ruler, and was known for his generosity and the justness of his rule. Although Bimbisara pursued expansionist politics, he was still able to maintain peaceful relations with most of his peers. ....

Remembering Harsha: The Forgotten Vardhana Ruler of India

Much of the information we have of Harsha, known also as Harshavardhana, comes from the
Harshacharita (meaning “Deeds of Harsha”), a biography of the ruler written in Sanskrit by Banabhatta, a poet who lived at the court of Harsha.
According to E. B. Cowell and F. W. Thomas, who published an English translation of the
Harshacharita in 1897, this work “appears to have been almost forgotten in India.” Although Harsha was a formidable ruler, he seems to have been not significant enough to be remembered. This might not be overly surprising if one considers the situation in India at that point of time. ....
