Discontent has bubbled over following the rollout of a Streets Alive project two months ago. Street calming planter boxes have been repeatedly vandalised, more than 1000 people have signed a petition and a council meeting this week burst at the seams with vocal locals.
The nearly $1 million roading project aimed to make Gore s streets both safer and more accessible. ....

Initiatives that aim to improve Gore street safety do the opposite, councillors told

Some of Gore’s elderly residents are too scared to leave their homes and drive in the town because of changes the council has made as parts of its Streets Alive initiative, councillor Glenys Dickson told a council meeting on Tuesday.
And results to the council’s own survey about changes to the town’s streets found some initiatives were unpopular and there were concerns about safety issues.
The council has rolled out a three-month trial of its Streets Alive project, which has changed some layouts for traffic throughout the town, by adding pocket parks, planters, roundabouts and courtesy crossings. ....

Gore District Council's mothballed subdivision could be sold

Earlier this week, Gardyne said the subdivision was on his list of land to be investigated.
”It s certainly one we’ll be looking at and if I had my way then yes, we d sell it,’’ he said.
”But we [the subcommittee] are only making recommendations, and they have to be put to the council. ’
The council voted to mothball the project in December 2018, sighting a significant increase in development costs.
This week, council chief executive Steve Parry confirmed the council had not instigated legal proceedings against any companies or contractors that worked on the subdivision.
The minutes of a District Growth Committee meeting on November 27, 2018, which were obtained under the Official Information Act, show councillor Cliff Bolger, who was then deputy mayor, said it was not a good look for the council to be suing one of its ratepayers, and he believed that issue needed to be put to one side”. ....

Council chief executive critical of Government water reforms

ALDEN WILLIAMS/Stuff
The Government wants to take control of water out of the hands of councils and create publically owned water authorities.
The Government should fund water infrastructure the same way it funds roading, instead of going ahead with widespread reforms, Gore District Council chief executive Steve Parry says.
A report from Parry, which was tabled at a full council meeting on Tuesday, says councils should not just accept that delivery of Three Waters infrastructure should be removed from their control and vested in a new publicly-owned entity, without considering what might be possible if central Government provided funding assistance. ....

An increase in the amount of green waste being disposed at the Gore District Council’s landfill has meant the council has become ’a victim of its own success’’.
It is now investigating whether it would reinstate charging for the service for some users.
In May 2020, the Gore District Council removed the charge for green waste, allowing the public, including commercial businesses, to deposit any green waste from grass clippings to trees for free.
A report from council facilities administration officer Neil Mair, which was tabled at a Gore District Council meeting on Tuesday, said green waste was now not weighed at the landfill, but visually the volume had increased considerably since the fee was stopped. ....
