Event Description Winds and Percussion at Southeast Final Concert to Feature A Saxophone Tribute to Rudy Wiedoeft At 7:30 pm on May 3 and 4, music students at Southeast will present their second and final concert series of the year. Featured will be the Southeast Concert Band, Brass Choir, Woodwind Choir, Percussion Ensemble, and a variety of smaller ensembles. The highlight of the two concerts will be performances by Dr. Zach Stern, who is a Part-Time Faculty member at Southeast and a member of the internationally acclaimed Sinta Quartet. On the May 4th concert, Dr. Stern will be featured in A Tribute to Rudy Wiedoeft, which was originally arranged by Gunther Schuller and has been adapted for Woodwind Choir, percussion, and saxophone soloist by Dr. Stern. On the May 3rd concert, he will also perform Air Nostalgique for solo saxophone and concert band by Dutch composer Ted Huggens. ....
Written by Doug Hall on May 20, 2021 If you happened to be on the Williamsburg Bridge anytime from the summer of 1959 through roughly the autumn of 1961, you would have been privileged to hear the sound of a true artist seeking to find new directions and an inner voice on his instrument. Already famous and successful, with constant performing and recording, Sonny Rollins, one of the greatest tenor saxophonists of the Bebop and hard bop eras, had left the public eye, working out his notes alone on the bridge, to find a new conversation with his horn. He would later record The Bridge, his 1962 comeback album, a direct inspiration, and result of this sabbatical. Rollins’ shift to a more narrative voice and stream of consciousness style on his saxophone would be highly influential, impacting all other jazz horn players to follow. ....
John McHenry Boatwright. It was in the sanctuary of St. James A.M.E. Church in Tennille, Ga. that John McHenry Boatwright (1928–1994) developed a passion for music. He was seven years old at the time and a natural piano player. Boatwright was the youngest son of Levi and Lillie Boatwright. His father was a switchman in Tennille’s rail yards. He found himself out of work when the Great Depression struck in 1929. Boatwright’s mother helped to support the family by working as a cook in a private home. The people around young Boatwright who’d experienced his gift knew that his talent would go unrecognized if he stayed in the South. So, his older sister invited him to live with her. By age 12, he’d abandoned familiar surroundings for opportunities in Boston. ....
