Tuesday, 13 April 2021 - 7:53
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Funeral will take place on Saturday 17 April 2021 at 3pm in St George’s Chapel, Windsor. The Funeral Service will begin with a National Minute’s Silence at three o’clock. The service will be preceded by a ceremonial procession inside the grounds of Windsor Castle.
The plans for the funeral are in line with The Duke of Edinburgh s own personal wishes, and the occasion will recognise and celebrate The Duke’s life and his more than 70 years of service to The Queen, the UK and the Commonwealth.
It will be a Ceremonial Royal Funeral, the same as for Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, rather than a State Funeral – something which is generally reserved for Monarchs. The plans have been approved by The Queen and reflect appropriate Government advice. ....

WWII veteran and one of the last surviving Buffalo Soldiers, John Joseph Nichols of Chester passed away

BILL LOHMANN
Richmond Times-Dispatch
As a young man, duty called John Joseph Nichols to serve his country as one of America’s Buffalo Soldiers. As an old man, he felt called to keep telling their story.
“I feel that I have to tell them about it and to bring them up so they know and can be proud,” Nichols said in a 2016 interview with The Times-Dispatch about his frequent public presentations, particularly for schoolchildren, about the so-called Buffalo Soldiers, the Army’s African American units. Nichols served in one of those units, the 10th Cavalry Regiment, during World War II, before racial segregation in the military ended. ....

Black History Month is a time to remember some of the notable African-Americans in one’s community, be it large or small.
Here in Somerset, no one may be better tailored for that role than Louis Garrett.
For decades, Garrett — tall and thin, always impeccably dressed, usually in a hat — made his trade in the clothing business, dressing some of Somerset’s best and brightest and helping them look sharp. But beyond the needle and thread, Garrett lived an extraordinary life — particularly as a World War II hero. ....

The Sinister Roman Cavalry Helmet of the Ribchester Hoard

How Old is the Ribchester Helmet?
The Ribchester Helmet has been dated to between the late 1
st and early 2
nd centuries AD. Although a Roman cavalryman used the helmet, it is clear that it was not meant to be worn in actual combat. This is due to the helmet’s fine workmanship and rich ornamentation, which would have made it impractical on the field of battle. The Ribchester Helmet was made using copper alloy and consists of a cavalry helmet with a visor in the form of a human face. The helmet is decorated with reliefs depicting a skirmish between infantry and cavalry. It is believed that there was a sphinx attached to the top of the helmet, though this had been lost prior the object’s discovery. ....
