Peabody 'Explosions' Remain Mystery 2 Months Later

UpdatedMon, Apr 12, 2021 at 4:23 pm ET Reply Peabody Captain Dennis Bonaiuto told Patch the origin of the two loud booms that residents said shook houses and sounded like explosions remain unexplained two months later. (Dave Copeland/Patch) PEABODY, MA The reports came in one after the other on social media around noon on Feb. 23 when Peabody residents near the Salem line said they heard and felt two booms so furious it felt like explosions within their own homes. But, despite exhausting research of similar incidents across the country and consulting a Salem State University team that studies weather-related phenomenon, police said they never determined a firm reason for blasts and have concluded they were most likely a naturally occurring incident.

Two Mysterious Explosions Felt In Peabody Under Investigation

Feb 24, 2021 PEABODY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) Officials in Peabody are pulling out all the stops as they try to figure out what caused two unidentified loud booms this week. Hundreds of residents from Salem to Peabody told police they heard and felt two explosion-like sounds at around 11:30 a.m. and noon on Tuesday in the area of Goodwin Circle to downtown Peabody. Police spokesman Captain Dennis Bonaiuto said the Peabody Police Department would send up a drone Wednesday to see if anything obvious could be spotted that might help them figure out what prompted the booms. Police said on Facebook that Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) canine units would also be in the area Wednesday to assist in the investigation to determine the origin of the loud noises that were both heard and felt.
