Darien, CT - June 29, 2021 - To the delight of many local children – and after the long pandemic, to the delight of many parents – the Darien VFW Post 6933 is proud to host the sixteenth annual July 4th Push-n-Pull Parade. In keeping with what has now become an annual tradition for Darien, the patriotic parade will comprise children riding bikes, scooters, wagons and non-motorized vehicles.

America’s most iconic youth organizations the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of the USA have been jolted by unprecedented one-year drops in membership, due partly to the pandemic, and partly to social trends that have been shrinking their ranks for decades.
While both organizations insist they’ll survive, the dramatic declines raise questions about how effectively they’ll be able to carry out their time-honored missions – teaching skills and teamwork, providing outdoor adventure, encouraging community service.
Membership for the BSA’s flagship Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA programs dropped from 1.97 million in 2019 to 1.12 million in 2020, a 43% plunge, according to figures provided to The Associated Press. Court records show membership has fallen further since then, to about 762,000. ....

Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts report steep decline in membership

The Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of the USA both saw steep declines in membership from 2019 to 2020, according to The Associated Press.
Figures reported by the AP showed a 43 percent plunge in membership for the Boy Scouts last year, falling to 1.12 million from 1.97 million in 2019.
Membership in the Girl Scouts fell at a smaller rate, down to a little over 1 million from 1.4 million the previous year.

“Like many youth-serving organizations, some of our members paused their Girl Scout experience during the pandemic,” a spokesperson for the Girl Scouts said in a statement to The Hill. ....
