Letters: Domestic violence stats 'overwhelming'


 
Each May, Queensland marks Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month to raise community awareness and send a clear message that domestic and family violence will not be tolerated.
Across Australia, police are called out to domestic and family violence incidents once every two minutes.
In 2020, the QPS investigated more than 107,000 domestic and family violence occurrences across the state.
The QPS is committed to protecting and supporting victims of domestic and family violence and holding perpetrators to account.
The statistics are still overwhelming:
- 1 woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner.
- 1 in 4 women have experienced emotional abuse by a current or former ....

Broncos stars Brodie Croft, John Asiata and Tom Fleger paid a special visit to club charity partner Act For Kids recently, taking part in the organisation’s weekly Dads & Kids program at Kedron Football Club.
The players took part in an afternoon of fun games and lots of laughter, playing bull rush and a few games of touch footy with the excited participants.  
Act For Kids provides free therapy and support services to children and families who have experienced, or are at risk of child abuse and neglect. ....

More than 300 people gathered last night (5 May) to pay their respects and show their support to victims of domestic and family violence in a moving candlelight vigil and community march at Maroochydore.
It comes as Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month (May) is now well underway, a state-wide initiative encouraging communities across Queensland to stand as one and send a clear message that domestic and family violence in families and homes will not be tolerated.
Sunshine Coast Council Community Portfolio Councillor David Law said the Let’s Grow Together event, hosted in partnership with Sunshine Coast Council and Centacare, was well attended and not only helped spread awareness of the important issue, it also shone the spotlight on support services available. ....

COVID-19 saw an increase in domestic and family violence incidences with almost 1 in 10 Australian women in a relationship being affected.

Queenslanders are being reminded that we all have a role to play in preventing domestic and family violence in our community with Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month now underway.
Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Shannon Fentiman said to achieve lasting and sustainable positive cultural change, all parts of the community need to be involved and committed to ending domestic and family violence.
“This Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month is a reminder to all Queenslanders to play your part in preventing domestic and family violence,” Minister Fentiman said. ....
