Hundreds of brightly-colored paper cranes perched on the steps of the Capitol Thursday, a sign of solidarity, hope and support for Lam Hong Le, a Vietnamese war refugee at immediate risk of deportation. Accompanying the cranes were advocates from various groups there to demand Governor Gavin Newsom issue a pardon for Le.

Henry County Public Health Offering Vaccine Clinic for Spanish Speakers

Iowa Welcomes its Immigrant Neighbors (WINS) and Henry County Public Health are partnering to offer a special COVID-19 vaccine clinic tomorrow. Anyone 18 or older is welcome to attend at the First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Pleasant, 902 S. Walnut, from 9-11a.m. They will be offering both Moderna and Johnson and Johnson vaccines.
Other COVID vaccine offerings coming up in the KCII-listening area include a clinic today featuring the Johnson and Johnson vaccine at Jefferson County Public Health, with appointments required. Louisa County has two options including the Community Health Centers of Southeast Iowa in Columbus City offering appointments week days for those 65 and over as well as Louisa County Public Health offering vaccines for homebound individuals by appointment. Iowa County Public Health is hosting clinics from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 12th and Wednesday May 26th by appointment. All of the clinics are free for participants. Des Plaines awards $160,000 in social service grants

Twenty-eight organizations will receive municipal grants totaling $160,000 through Des Plaines annual social service program.

The city council approved the grants this week. Funding was included in the annual city budget.
The city s health and human services division evaluated the grant requests. Grants ranged from $2,000 to $15,000 each.
The grants were awarded based on several criteria, including: what local needs an applying agency meets; the number of Des Plaines residents served; the percentage of clients from Des Plaines; and the abundance or scarcity of the service provided.
The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged Des Plaines-area social service agencies to serve a growing number of clients, Kathy Puetz, a community social worker for the city, wrote in a memo about the grants. ....

Supporters of Assembly Bill 937, the Voiding Inequality and Seeking Inclusion for Our Immigrant Neighbors (Vision) Act, say that the practice of transferring people from prison to Ice was a cruel form of “double punishment” that indefinitely separated people from their loved ones after they have served their time. “If it wasn’t for where they were born, these Californians would be able to return home,” Carrillo said.
California has no legal obligation to report prisoners to Ice, and despite intense backlash last year, Gavin Newsom, the state’s Democratic governor, has defended the policy and allowed the voluntary transfers to continue. The transfers can affect undocumented people and legal permanent residents, who lose their green cards once they are in Ice custody, due to their criminal records. ....
