Anna Scharf is a Republican and will represent House District 23, which includes parts of Polk, Benton, Marion and Yamhill Counties. Scharf was appointed by commissioners in those counties to replace fellow Republican Mike Nearman, who was expelled from the Legislature last month for allowing violent demonstrators into the Capitol building.
Scharf said she wants to build bridges in order to serve her district effectively. “We focus on so many of the negative, small issues that are big issues, but we don’t focus on all the great things that happen in this building, she said. Oregon State Representative Called to Resign for Letting Far-Right Group Enter State Capitol On 1/13/21 at 3:11 PM EST An Oregon state representative has been called to resign after he opened the doors of the Oregon State Capitol building in Salem to admit right-wing protesters during a one-day special session last month. Representative Nearman put every person in the Capitol in serious danger, Speaker Kotek said in the statement. As we tragically saw last week during the insurrection at the United States Capitol, the consequences could have been much worse had law enforcement not stepped in so quickly. His actions have created immense fear among legislators and Capitol staff. I believe he should resign immediately because he has already breached the public ....
Oregon Capitol remains closed as lawmakers start 2021 session Pandemic, protest threats prompt leaders to opt for hybrid model tested last year. When Oregon lawmakers come to Salem on Monday, Jan. 11, to open their 81st legislative cycle since statehood, some things will be familiar. Newly elected senators and representatives will take their oaths, choose the presiding officers who control the flow of legislation, receive assignments to the committees that shape the legislation, and start the process for almost 3,000 bills and resolutions filed beforehand. (That total is about average for an odd-numbered-year session.) But because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and more recently the anti-lockdown protesters who invaded the Capitol during a Dec. 21 special session the 160 days scheduled for the 2021 session will be like no other in a century, since the 1918 influenza pandemic. ....
