Impeachment fiasco: Trumpism gets new lease on life

538 9 minutes read
For the second time in one year, Donald Trump was acquitted in an impeachment trial by the Senate. Fifty-seven senators voted to convict him for inciting the far-right mob that carried out the Jan. 6 assault on Congress, falling far short of the 67 required. Only seven Republicans broke ranks and supported a conviction.
This outcome marks one of the most remarkable turnarounds in modern U.S. politics as Trump is resuscitated from near political death. But because of the approach adopted by the Democratic Party in the wake of the Jan. 6 attack, Trump’s acquittal was essentially a foregone conclusion. ....

Donald Trump impeachment trial came to an end without calling witnesses.
Chuck Todd asked about the initial call for witnesses after a stunning new CNN report confirmed by Republican Congresswoman
Jaime Herrera Beutler about Trump’s call with
Kevin McCarthy during the riots.
“Her story was known for weeks. Why did you not try to contact her until the last couple of days?” Todd asked.
Raskin said they reached out to her after her statement, and touted how they won the vote on witnesses before that ultimately fell through. ....

On Saturday morning, the United States Senate was at risk of having a useful moment. The night before, Republican Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler had gone public again with the story of her interactions with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on January 6. McCarthy, hiding as the insurrectionists stormed the Capitol, had placed a phone call to then-President Donald Trump to beg him to call off the mob he d sicced on Congress to prevent the Legislative Branch from certifying that he d soon lose power. Well, Kevin, Trump responded, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are. Herrera Beutler released a statement appealing to others to step up with her: To the patriots who were standing next to the former president as these conversations were happening, or even to the former vice president: if you have something to add here, now would be the time. ....

Trump evades conviction again as Republicans opt for self-preservation

Twice-impeached former US President Donald Trump has evaded conviction once more.
On the fourth day of the impeachment trial, the Senate verdict is in. Voting guilty: 57 senators (representing nearly 70% of the country or 202 million people, and the majority public opinion on the issue of conviction). Voting not guilty: 43 Senators. In American maths, that is an acquittal, falling short of the two-thirds majority needed to convict.
Moments after the vote, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell called Trump’s actions before the attack “a disgraceful dereliction of duty” and confirmed the former president was “practically and morally” responsible for provoking the events on January 6 whereby “criminals were carrying his banners” lay siege to the Capitol. ....
