The Biden White House is aware how hard it will be to convince congressional Republicans to support an ambitious infrastructure and jobs proposal.
And so, they’ve enlisted other Republicans to help them do the convincing.

Many conservatives argue that the American Rescue Plan (ARP) hindered the post-pandemic economic recovery by overspending on unemployment and contributing to inflation.
The $1.9 trillion package included a massive expansion of unemployment benefits, which encouraged many workers to stay home. It may also contribute to moderate levels of inflation, which happens when new cash rapidly enters the economy. Common-good conservatives, who are less skeptical of government spending than other Republicans, are proposing more targeted legislation that they argue would not have as many negative effects as the ARP.
Many congressional Republicans and economists cite the ARP’s $300 unemployment benefit extension as a key cause of April’s poor jobs numbers. As a result, 15 states have announced that they will not offer the expanded unemployment to their residents, and more are expected to foll ....

Alabama Becomes Latest State To End $300 Unemployment Bonus

Alabama will soon cease participating in the federal government’s unemployment insurance program that grants out-of-work Americans an extra $300 per week, the state’s governor said.
Republican Gov. Kay Ivey announced that the state would withdraw from the coronavirus relief program by June 19, 2021, arguing that the $300 in additional weekly payments was incentivizing people not to look for jobs. She suggested that the labor shortages reported in states across the country have been caused by the unemployment boost.
“As Alabama’s economy continues its recovery, we are hearing from more and more business owners and employers that it is increasingly difficult to find workers to fill available jobs, even though job openings are abundant,” Ivey said in a statement. ....

Republican Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, who voted to convict Trump in the last two Senate impeachment proceedings, was censured over the weekend by the Weber County GOP.
“The Weber County Republican Convention censures Mitt Romney for his votes to convict President Trump in two U.S. Senate impeachment trials,” the resolution stated. “The Weber County Republican Convention thanks Senator Mike Lee for his votes to protect due process and the US Constitution by voting against the unconstitutional charges. The Weber County Republican Convention also thanks Congressmen Chris Stewart, John Curtis, Blake Moore, and Burgess Owens for voting against the Democrats’ politically motivated articles of impeachment.” ....
