Sarawak gets its own coastguard

KUCHING: The newly-formed Sarawak Coastguard will work with other maritime agencies to protect the state’s coastal waters and gazetted marine parks from encroachment, says Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“The state government decided to set up the coastguard because of our large area of marine parks and long coastline.
“Sometimes foreign fishermen encroach into our coastal waters, so we will work with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) to protect our waters, ” he told reporters after launching the coastguard at Kuching Waterfront yesterday.
He said the coastguard’s area of operations would cover more than 1.2 million hectares of protected marine waters within the Similajau National Park, Tanjung Datu National Park, Talang-Satang National Park, Miri-Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park, Santubong National Park, Limbang Mangrove National Park, Bruit ....

Covid-19: Sarawak cops to step up enforcement of SOP compliance


KUCHING: Police will step up enforcement of Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP) in Sarawak to improve compliance, starting with Kuching.
Sarawak police commissioner Comm Datuk Aidi Ismail said 950 personnel from the military, Rela, Civil Defence Force, state security unit and local authorities would join 241 police personnel to conduct patrols and monitor SOP compliance in public places.
He said Kuching would be divided into 15 zones for the enforcement, with each zone under the head of the respective police station.
We will look at the situation in each zone and deploy enforcement teams to places frequented by the public, such as markets, eateries and shops. ....

KUCHING, Jan 28: Homeless folk found sleeping out in the open by the Welfare Department are given food and sleeping bags instead of transporting them to transit centres as they prefer to keep their freedom, said Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah.
Fatimah, who is the Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister said that however, their presence and location will be recorded for follow-up actions at a later time. ....

KUCHING, Jan 13 ― Reports of floods are pouring in as incessant rain continues to fall, inundating roads and causing flash floods in several low-lying neighbourhoods in Kuching and Bintulu as people scramble to get their belongings to higher ground.
Fire and Rescue Department personnel have also been mobilised to badly flooded areas.
Among the places affected in Kuching are the Kuching Waterfront, Hui Sing Garden, Tabuan Dayak, Stampin, the Sarawak General Hospital and several other areas in Petra Jaya. ....
