Governments are 'weaponising' Covid-19 to silence dissident artist voices, report says

Seventeen artists were killed, 82 were imprisoned and 133 detained over the past year in 26 countries, according to Freemuse in its latest
State of Artistic Freedom report. The survey, published last week by the the Copenhagen-based human rights organisation, is based on the analyses of 978 incidents regarding “violations to the right to freedom of artistic expression” documented in 89 countries.
Crucially, the Covid-19 pandemic has also led to further repression with 65 artists detained, prosecuted, or imprisoned for speaking out about the way the pandemic has been handled in their respective countries. Dhaka, Feb 26 : Protests erupted in Dhaka after writer and blogger Mushtaq Ahmed, denied bail six times, died in Kashimpur jail.
Blaming the government for the death and demanded repeal of the controversial Digital Security Act (DSA), protesters threatened to lay siege to the Home Ministry on March 1.
Ahmed, 53, used to write under the pen name Michael Kumir Thakur and was critical on social media of the government s handling of the pandemic. His book Kumir (crocodile) Chasher Diary was published in November 2018, and he was working on another book. ....
