ISLAMABAD: The National Price Monitoring Committee (NPMC) on Monday directed provincial government departments to keep the prices of basic commodities in check and import four million tonnes of wheat for building buffer stock.
The NPMC at a meeting, chaired by Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin, declared that cartelisation would not be tolerated at any cost. Stern action should be taken by the provincial administrations and departments concerned to keep the prices of basic commodities in check.
The direction came from the finance minister when the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) presented findings of an inquiry into the poultry sector at the meeting. All those responsible for undue profiteering or hoarding would be taken to task, the minister said. ....

ISLAMABAD: Showing concerns over the fall in cotton production and low wheat yield, the National Standing Committee on Commerce on Thursday asked the relevant ministry to bridge shortfall with timely imports to contain price hike in domestic market.
The meeting, chaired by committee chairman MNA Naveed Qamar, suggested to the Ministry of National Food Security & Research to fix minimum support price for cotton to encourage its production in the country. Cotton yield fell to 6 million bales in the current year from 12m bales owing to multiple reasons. ....

Standing committee seeks report how Pakistan became importer from exporter
ISLAMABAD:
The National Assembly Standing Committee on Commerce raised concerns on Thursday over wheat imports and sought a report from the food security ministry, as to how the country, which used to export the commodity in the past, became an importer.
The standing committee met here with its chairman Syed Naveed Qamar in the chair. The meeting was attended by its members as well as Food Security Secretary Ghufran Memon and Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) Chairman Riaz Memon.
Briefing the committee on wheat import, the food security secretary said that the support price of wheat was fixed at Rs1600 per 40 kilogrammes five months ago but later, the minimum price was increased to Rs1,800 per 40 kg. ....

ISLAMABAD: With falling sugar prices in the world market, the government is considering floating an international tender for import of 50,000 tonnes of the sweetener to maintain its price within the official retail rate.
A meeting of the National Price Monitoring Committee (NPMC) presided over by Minister for Finance, Revenue and Industries Hammad Azhar on Monday discussed the proposal.
Last week, the federal cabinet reversed a decision of the Economic Coordination Committee to allow the import of 0.5 million tonnes of white sugar from India via land route. The import of sugar through the land route is cheaper than via sea. ....
