Eleven months since many students set foot in a classroom, decisions to reopen schools during the COVID-19 pandemic remain difficult and divisive at the local, state and federal level. As a teacher in City Heights pointed out in a commentary in this week’s The San Diego Union-Tribune, low-income residents often live in homes with multiple generations of families. While kids have not been at particular risk from the virus, that’s not true of the grandparents with whom they share living quarters. ....

San Diego County teachers and other essential workers may get access to COVID vaccinations as soon as two to three weeks from now, County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said Thursday.
In addition to school employees, child care, emergency services and food or agriculture workers are next in line to get vaccinated.
Fletcher said school employee vaccinations will be prioritized for schools or districts that have already opened or have signed agreements to open, pending administration of the vaccine which may encourage districts that have been hesitant to reopen.
But San Diego Unified, the county’s largest school district, isn’t just waiting for teacher vaccinations to reopen it also is waiting for local COVID case rates to decline, the district said Thursday. ....

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) During Thursday’s county press conference, San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chair Nathan Fletcher said he’s optimistic the county will move into the next tier in the next two to three weeks, meaning teachers, law enforcement and food/agriculture workers will be eligible for vaccinations.
Currently, healthcare workers and people older than 65 are the focus, but he said when there is not as high of a demand for appointments for the older population, that will be the county’s indication that it’s time to move on to the next tier. Fletcher says this will depend on how many doses the county gets. ....

Pediatricians: schools must reopen now to relieve children's suffering

Pediatricians across San Diego County say they are deeply troubled by what they see school closures doing to children.
Dr. Janet Crow, a pediatrician at UC San Diego, talks every day with middle and high school kids who are heading toward depression or are flat-out depressed, she said.
For the record:
8:29 PM, Feb. 07, 2021The caption for Dr. Maya Kumar’s photo misstated the name of the hospital where she works. She works at Rady Children’s Hospital, not Grady Children’s Hospital.
One of her high school patients can’t bring himself to do Zoom school, she said. His mom isn’t there to help him because she is an essential worker with two jobs. The 16-year-old also is working at a tire shop to support his family. ....

Frustrated Parents Blame Teacher's Unions for Schools Not Reopening

“People are assigning us a lot more power and influence than we actually have, said Kisha Borden, the President of San Diego Education Association, the union representing teachers in the district.
Borden said the district creates the reopening plan and the union bargains on the impacts, and it just so happens both sides agree that it is not safe to reopen schools, especially now with the surge in cases and the new variant.
“The public is getting frustrated with the education system, even if they don’t want to go back to school and they like distance learning, it’s still hard,” Sorenson said parents could take out their frustration at the ballot box when voters are asked to pay more taxes for education. ....
