Ryan Little photo Austin San Souci was just 2 years old the first time he rode a bike. “He never had training wheels. He just took off,” said his father, Tyler San Souci. “We sort of supported that all along.” Now 16, Austin has expanded his aspirations far beyond the backyard of his parents’ Bryson City home. The Swain County High School student spends much of his time on the road, working toward his ultimate goal of becoming a professional mountain bike rider. Last year was Austin’s first racing downhill, his chosen genre within the mountain biking family. The results were encouraging, to say the least. In 2020, during the four-part Downhill Southeast Series, he posted first, second, third and seven-place finishes, delivering an overall first place ranking based on total points earned during the series. ....

The resort has a host of activities and events to take advantage of during the summer months. SNOWSHOE With an abundance of activities to do and events to attend, the absence of snow and warming temperatures doesn’t force Snowshoe Mountain Resort into hibernation during the summer months. The 2021 summer schedule at the resort gets underway on Thursday, May 6 when the Raven Golf Club opens for the season. The next date to mark down is May 21, when the increasingly popular Bike Park and all of the other activities at the resort opens. ....

This past summer we saw record turnouts for each venue, lots of new riders, and competitive racing. The introduction of two racecourses allowed us to offer a fun welcoming experience to new racers while maintaining the technically challenging race courses that our advanced riders expect. We partnered with Zone 4 timing to provide live timing, split times, and live results which helps to keep a punctual race program. Downhill Southeast is a well oiled machine, and we plan to further refine that at our events in 2021. ....
