Downeast Trout Unlimited meeting March 17 March 15, 2021 on News, Waterfront ELLSWORTH The Maine brook trout is the focus of the next Downeast Trout Unlimited meeting on Wednesday, March 17. The online meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will take place via Zoom. A busines meeting will be followed by two speakers. At 5:45, Merry Gallagher, native fish conservation biologist with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s Division of Fisheries and Hatcheries, will present “Maine’s Wild Brook Trout: Past, Present and Future.” Gallagher is a stream ecologist with over 20 years experience in stream survey methodology, native fish ecology and GIS data analysis. She manages the IFW Stream Survey database and has overseen efforts to convert historic fisheries data into GIS-compatible formats to improve the general knowledge regarding the distribution and status of Maine’s native fishes. ....

Gallagher’s talk, “Maine’s Wild Brook Trout: The past, present and future of a Heritage Fish” will explore the status of Maine’s wild brook trout, with a bit of history and future conservation and management goals for this iconic species. Dylan Whitaker, a fisheries research technician for IFW, will present The Lake Whitefish Project. A Maine native who has worked on salmonid fisheries management across the country, Whitaker returned to Maine in 2018 to lead the research. Lake whitefish, a popular sport fish native to Maine, are designated as a Special Concern Species by Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Research has helped to identify the factors that contributed to their decline, however, there’s still a lot to learn, and that’s where the public can help, according to Trout, in a news release. Whitaker will outline their biology and explain how residents can participate in a citizen science project. ....
