The stubborn refusal of immigration officials to release video of a Sri Lankan woman who died while in detention is raising suspicions among her bereaved sisters and opposition lawmakers about a cover-up.
Wayomi and Poornima Sandamali met with opposition lawmakers on May 19 to discuss the death of their elder sister, Wishma, 33. She died on March 6 while detained at a facility run by the Nagoya Regional Immigration Services Bureau.
“The immigration agency may be hiding something if it is unable to release the video,” one of the sisters said. ....

Immigration law revision proposal scrapped due to Suga's poor polls : The Asahi Shimbun

Opponents of the bill to revise the immigration control law gather in front of the Diet on May 18. (Yosuke Fukudome)
The ruling coalition decided on May 18 to abandon a bill to revise the immigration control law over fears that pursuing it would worsen the Suga Cabinet s plunging approval ratings and concerns about delays in Diet deliberations.
The opposition on two occasions rejected proposals from the ruling coalition to vote on the legislation in the Lower House Judicial Affairs Committee, mainly due to questions about why a 33-year-old Sri Lankan woman died while in detention at an immigration facility.
Considering the need for deliberation time in the Upper House, with the current Diet session scheduled to end on June 16, the ruling coalition’s only option was to force a vote on the proposal to revise the law in the Lower House committee. ....

Talks to revise immigration bill fail; vote likely within days : The Asahi Shimbun

The meeting room of the Lower House Judicial Affairs Committee remains empty on May 14 after a breakdown in talks meant that no vote would be held on legislation to revise the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Law. (Ryo Ikeda)
The government brushed aside opposition calls to release further information on the death of a Sri Lankan woman in an immigration detention facility and forged ahead May 14 with plans to revise the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Law without amendments.
The proposed legislation has drawn sharp criticism from groups providing support to refugee applicants as well as legal scholars, who contend it could potentially make things harder for applicants seeking refugee status. ....

Opposition demands truth come out over Sri Lankan's death : The Asahi Shimbun

The death of a Sri Lankan woman at an immigration detention facility in March has become a rallying cry as the Diet discusses a government-drafted bill to revise the immigration law.
The Justice Ministry’s Immigration Services Agency of Japan investigated the incident and released an interim report on April 9, shortly before the start of the Diet’s discussion on the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Law.
But the report apparently omitted the fact that a psychiatrist recommended that Wishma Sandamali receive provisional release two days before her death.
Opposition lawmakers have taken issue with the omission, demanding a full accounting of how the woman died in detention. ....
